The annual South Jersey Lifeguard Pool Swimming Championships will feature two all-women's races today for the first time in its history.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Aquatics & Fitness Center at 18th Street and Simpson Avenue in Ocean City. The guards, many of whom are outstanding current or former collegiate swimmers, will race in a 25-meter pool in a meet that's similar to a high school meet.

Female lifeguards have participated in the meet for many years, but always in open races against the men. That will continue tonight, but there also will be a women's 100-meter freeestyle and 200 medley relay. The women's races will be scored the same as the open races.

Ocean City won the team title last year with 71 points. Wildwood Crest was second with 67 and Atlantic City third with 44.
