The Atlantic Shore 14-year-old baseball team, led by pitcher Kyler Pikus, made a nearly flawless debut at the Middle Atlantic Babe Ruth Regional Tournament on Thursday at Surf Stadium in Atlantic City.
Pikus pitched a three-hitter and Atlantic Shore, the host team, beat Piedmont, Del., 12-0 in seven innings. Atlantic Shore had 10 hits, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the second to cruise to the win. Atlantic Shore added a run in the fourth inning and scored four in the seventh.
Pikus singled in two runs in the first inning. Also for the winners, shortstop Cody Sadreameli and right fielder Matt Thomas each had a double and a single and center fielder Anthony Boselli added two hits. Second baseman Kyle Gerace hit a ground-rule double that one-hopped over the fence in left field. Zach Newman, the left fielder, had two stolen bases and two runs.
“They had a spectacular day,” said Brian Pugh, an Atlantic Shore co-coach along with Mike Gill and manager Joe Iannuzzelli. “They came out ready to play and they performed well. We haven’t had a pitcher go seven innings until today. We have nine strong arms, but Kyler was exceptionally sharp. All 15 guys got to play and had a hand in the win.”
Twelve of Atlantic Shore’s 15 players were on last year’s 13-and-under team that reached the Babe Ruth World Series in Clifton, N.Y.
Sadreameli and Thomas, both Northfield residents, were on that team last year.
“We have a really strong team and everybody knows their role,” Thomas said. “We have a good shot if we keep playing like we can and working hard.”
Both players were impressed by Surf Stadium. “Everything there felt so big,” said Sadreameli.
Atlantic Shore has the day off today and will play Western New York (North Syracuse) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Surf Stadium. Pugh said that Gerace will be the starting pitcher.
Note — Following today’s three games, there will be a banquet and baseball skills competition at Surf Stadium, followed by a baseball movie.
