The East Vineland Senior League 15-16-year-old baseball team won the New Jersey state championship on Sunday night, defeating Tri-Boro 12-4 at Old Bridge.
Josh Hood went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored and Jayson Duquette went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and one run scored to lead East Vineland. Hector Perez went 2 for 2 and knocked in two runs.
Winning pitcher Jeremiah Torres struck out three in 32/3 innings.
East Vineland will face the Rhode Island champion in the first game of the Eastern Regional tournament that begins Thursday in West Deptford.
Northfield wins District 16 title: Northfield’s 11U All Star team defeated Upper Township in a best-of-three series over the weekend to take the District 16 Championship. Northfield lost the first game 4-3, which forced Northfield to travel to Upper Township, where it evened the series 1-1 with a 6-0 victory.
In Game 3, after trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, Northfield rallied. Timmy Tavagline, Jack Haines and Matt Bonczek all hit singles to load the bases. Jason Piereth drove in Travagline for the first run, followed by a hit from Liam Michel to bring in Haines and Bonczek for the 3-2 victory.
Northfield will now travel to Glassboro to compete in the Section 4 tournament, which begins Saturday.
Section 4 11-12 baseball
Somers Point 10, Monroe Township 8: Nicholas Wagner hit a two-run homer for Somers Point in the top of the eighth inning, and Somers Point held on to win in Gloucester City. Justin Sweeney came on in the fifth inning in relief of Cole Frye and got the win. Frye went 4 for 5 with a solo homer. Wagner was 3 for 3, and Sweeney had two hits.
Somers Point, the District 16 champion, plays Swedesboro-Woolwich at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Gloucester City. The winner of the game advances to the Section 4 winners bracket final.
Atlantic Shore 4, Mount Laurel 0: Van Patten gave up one hit in six shutout innings in the Southern New Jersey state tournament.
C.J. Egrie scored twice, and Trevor Cohen had two hits.
Atlantic Shore 14, Hamilton/Northern Burlington 2: Mark Elliott went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two runs scored and Atlantic Shore used an 11-run fourth inning to earn the victory. C.J. Egrie scored three runs, Matt Nunan hit two doubles and Ryan Spina went 2 for 3 with a double.
Winning pitcher Tommy Finnegan struck out four.
Atlantic Shore faces Washington Township at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in West Windsor with a spot in the Southern New Jersey State Tournament championship at stake.
