The West Cumberland softball team is one win away from the Junior League World Series after winning two games Wednesday in the Eastern Regional Tournament in West Haven, Conn.

The team comprised of 13-to-15-year-olds from the Bridgeton area will face the host team West Haven Little League (Conn.) at 8:30 a.m. today with the winner heading to the World Series in Kirland, Wash., which begins on Sunday.

"They are excited about it. They are a little tired today after playing two knockout games. I'm a little worried about them being a little flat (today). But the kids are excited," said West Cumberland manager Gary Woodruff in a telephone interview.

West Cumberland started its busy day with a 2-0 win over Geddes Little League of Westvale, N.Y. Alli Saul hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, scoring Abby DiJoseph and Alyssa Donato.

That was all West Cumberland would need as Alyssa Waddington pitched a complete-game shutout giving up just four hits with 10 strikeouts, and no walks.

West Cumberland then advanced to play West Point Little League of Greensburg, Pa., which has won the Eastern Regional the last three years.

Haley Hulitt got West Cumberland right on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning as they went on to win 5-1.

Hulitt also pitched the first four innings. Waddington pitched the final three innings.

Leadoff hitter Donato had three hits, including a double and two runs scored.

"I'm ecstatic. They've done everything I've asked of them," Woodruff said. "We've played very well defensively. You need a little luck to get to the World Series and you've got to play well too.

"We've got a chance. It's not going to be easy, especially when you play the host team. But with Haley pitching, I think we've got a good chance."

Note: The West Cumberland Senior League softball team continues its run in the World Series in Lower Sussex, Del. The team, which is 3-0 in pool play, did not play Wednesday night. They have assured themselves a spot in the semifinals and finish pool play today at 5:30 p.m. against Northwest/Mile High Little League of Butte, Mont.
