The Buena 14-U baseball team beat Madison 4-1 in Gloucester City on Monday to win the losers’-bracket final of the state Junior Little League Tournament.
Buena plays Howell, the winners’-bracket winner, at 7 p.m. today in Gloucester City in a state 14-U Junior League final. If Buena wins, the teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the same site for the title.
Buena’s Lenny Coulter was the winning pitcher, going three innings. Reliever Andrew Cartier went one inning, while Cody Jelinek worked two innings and Tim Jurasik pitched the seventh inning for the save. Buena’s Dom Lopez had two doubles and an RBI. Kris Morgenweck hit a two-run single. Buena turned three double plays and committed no errors.
Senior League 16-U baseball
South Vineland 14, Freehold Township 0: South Vineland advanced to the state final with a five-inning win in Old Bridge.
Winning pitcher Johnny Malatesta went the distance and gave up three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. South Vineland had 12 hits.
Jacques Colon led with a double and two singles, Raekwon Ortiz had three hits, and Malatesta added two.
