Southern Regional High School graduate Frank Molinaro was named the 2017 United States Open champion Thursday for the 65-kilogram weight class in men’s freestyle wrestling due to a doping violation.

Molinaro finished second at the U.S. Open finals in Las Vegas in April behind Jordan Oliver. On Thursday, United World Wrestling disqualified Oliver after he tested positive for a stimulant at the event.

The disqualification advances Molinaro to the champion of the U.S. Open, earning the 2016 Olympian his spot for the World Team Trials, set for June 10 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Molinaro, a Barnegat native, is an assistant wrestling coach at Virginia Tech. He placed fifth in the 65-kilogram weight class in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, falling one victory short of earning a bronze medal.
