A look at the Phillies as opening day nears. The Phillies began the 2013 season 7:10 p.m. Monday at the Atlanta Braves.
The Phillies continue to be a team built on starting pitching.
The Phillies feature three of the games best in Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. If they perform well, the Phillies should be in contention for a playoff spot.
Hamels (17-6, 3.05 ERA) will start opening day. Halladay struggled in spring training with a 6.06 ERA in 161/3 innings, but Phillies officials say he is healthy and expect to him pitch well this season.
Kyle Kendrick and John Lannan round out the rotation. Kendrick was 9-4 with a 2.87 ERA after last season’s All Star break. Lannan pitched mostly in the minor leagues last season but did have a 4-1 record for the Washington Nationals in six starts.
