Ryan Howard could be in the Lakewood BlueClaws’ lineup Thursday night.
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Tuesday that Howard will return to Philadelphia on Wednesday for “functional testing” on the left Achilles’ tendon injury that has kept him out all season. Howard has been rehabilitating in Clearwater, Fla.
If Howard passes the tests, Amaro said, the first baseman would start a rehab assignment with Class A Lakewood on Thursday against the West Virginia Power at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, Ocean County.
Amaro also announced that catcher Brian Schneider had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed a high-ankle sprain, and that Schneider will be out 3-5 weeks. Schneider had been placed on the disabled list Monday.
