The United States men's-eight boat, with St. Augustine Prep graduate Ted Baumgardner in seat six, finished third in a preliminary heat at the U-23 World Rowing Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, on Thursday.

Baumgardner, 22, a recent graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is a Longport resident.

The U.S. crew had the early lead but was overtaken by New Zealand, which won in 5 minutes, 31.51 seconds.

Germany finished second in 5:37.67, and the U.S. crew third in 5:38.60.

The United States crew will be in a repechage (second chance race) at 6:16 a.m. EDT today. The opponents are Russia, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Spain.

The top two finishers reach Sunday's A (championship) final, and the other three boats go to the B (consolation) final.
