Lauryn Fields scored seven of her 17 points during the third quarter to help the visiting Middle Township High School girls basketball team beat top-seeded Deptford 49-27 in a South Jersey Group II semifinal game Saturday.

Fields also had six assists and five steals for Middle, which improved to 24-5 and is ranked seventh in The Press Elite 11,

The fourth-seeded Panthers led Deptford 15-13 after eight minutes and outscored the Spartans 26-10 during the middle quarters.

"I feel like in the second quarter we settled in and played better at both ends," Middle coach John Leahy said by telephone. "We really did a good job defensively, contesting every shot and rebounding well, and taking care of the ball."

Middle will face host Cedar Creek for the S.J. Group II title Monday at 6 p.m. in Egg Harbor City.

"It's certainly going to be a tough game," Leahy said. "They're very well coached and they're playing very well at home.

"We'll have to rebound well and play tough. If you want to win South Jersey, you have to beat teams like these."

Olivia Salvo scored 10 points for Middle, while Erin Ruskey and Holly McKaig each had five rebounds.

Middle's Lauren Legler and Marinna Peterson each hit 3-pointers during the second quarter as the Panthers took a 26-17 lead.

Salvo scored six points in the third quarter as Middle went up 41-22.

Cheyenne Clark led Depford with 12 points.
