Mike Toy, 56, of Ventnor, and Kristen Shema, 16, of Telford, Pa., were the overall winners of the 42nd annual Harry Yates Memorial Swim on Saturday in Atlantic City. The 1-mile ocean race was held at the Albany Avenue beach.

Toy, an Atlantic City Beach Patrol alumnus, won the race in 17 minutes, 17 seconds. He finished second in the race last year.

Shema was third overall and the women's champion in 17:32. She also won the Yates Swim women's title in 2012.

Andy Hitchings of Sacramento, Calif., was second overall in 17:30. Doug Grisbaum of Ocean City was fourth overall and third for the men in 17:43.

Abbey Neveling of Haddonfield finished seventh overall and was second for the women in 18:55. Liz Casey of the Beesleys Point section of Upper Township placed eighth overall and was third for the women in 19:29.

The race had 68 swimmers and all finished.

Masters row

The crew of Wayne MacMurray and Bill Kindle won the Brennan McCann Masters Series 5-Mile Row on Saturday at the Seaview Harbor beach in Egg Harbor Township. MacMurray, a veteran Upper Township lifeguard, and Kindle, a Wildwood Beach Patrol alumnus, won in 54 minutes, 17 seconds.

The team of Ed Giordano and Steve Kowalick was second in 56:33, and Judge Casciato and Jim Mason were third in 57:34.
