The Northfield 11-12 softball team beat Hammonton 9-3 in Middle Township on Thursday to win its first District 16 championship.

Northfield advanced to the Section 4 tournament and will play the winner between Harrison Township and West Deptford at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cherry Hill Atlantic Little League field.

"The girls were really excited about (being the first Northfield 11-12 champion)," Northfield coach Mike Toner said.

"They came together and played their best two games when it counted (6-2 over Hammonton on Tuesday, and Thursday's win). Hammonton beat us 4-1 (earlier in the tournament), but it was nice to see the girls rebound. They had some adversity but came out of the losers bracket and gained confidence."

Northfield's Mackenzie Brennan had three hits, including an RBI double. Northfield collected 12 hits, including two apiece by Brianna Barretta, Amanda Kinkler, winning pitcher Gillian McCarthy and Shannon Bennett.

Brennan and Bennett each had RBI doubles in the third inning as Northfield scored five runs.

McCarthy went the distance and gave up four hits, while striking out nine.

Hammonton's Maddie Guyer had three hits, including a triple, and a run.
