(On the Pitch is a quick conversation with a Cape-Atlantic League, Shore Conference or Tri-County Conference high school soccer player.)
Sixteen-year-old Jared Irwin is a force at Wildwood High School.
The junior center midfielder has scored four game-winning goals this season.
On how he got started: Well, when I was around 3 or 4 years old, my mom coached the recreational soccer team for my older sister. She would bring me to the practices and stuff and I would play with them, so that's how I got started.
On his favorite part of soccer: I just like getting out there and playing games, competing against rivals and winning. Winning is the best part. Our biggest accomplishment (this season) was beating Cape May Tech 2-1 in overtime. Since I've been playing soccer since I was a kid, a lot of my friends play soccer. It's a bond that cannot be broken.
On his favorite athlete: I don't really have a favorite team, I just like watching the games. I like Lionel Messi (Barcelona). I like how he's not the best player, but he's one of the most dangerous players. I look up to him because I'm not really that big, and it just gives me hope of continuing my career.
On his goals: I'd like for the team to end the season above .500 and hopefully get a playoff win this year. I want to continue playing soccer after high school.
On his soccer career: Hopefully, I'll be playing in college. It's definitely one of my goals. I haven't looked at any colleges yet, but I'd want to play D1 or D2.
