PHILADELPHIA  — Penn has made M. Grace Calhoun its first female athletic director, effective July 1.

Calhoun has been the athletic director and assistant vice president at Loyola of Chicago since 2011.

Penn AD Steve Bilsky had already announced he would retire on June 30.

She is the first female AD in the history of Philadelphia’s Big 5, which consists of Penn, Villanova, Temple, Saint Joseph’s and La Salle.

Penn president Amy Gutmann says, “We set out to find a star, and we did.”
