The Phillies made it official Tuesday as new manager Gabe Kapler announced Rob Thomson will be his bench coach.

Thomson, 54, was the New York Yankees bench coach. Thomson spent 28 years as a coach in the Yankees organization. He was the Yankees third base coach from 2009-14. Thomson interviewed to be the team’s manager this fall but did not get the job. New York hired former player Aaron Boone last weekend.

The Canadian born Thomson was known to have a good rapport with the Yankees players. He was also known for his organizational skills, especially with the way he helped run spring training.
