PHILADELPHIA – Ryan Howard will miss the next six to eight weeks of the season, the Phillies announced today.

Howard will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

The Phillies placed Howard on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. He underwent an MRI today.

No date for the surgery has been set.

“It was a normal tear,” Amaro said. “I’m encouraged it could have been much more significant damage.”
