Press of Atlantic City sports writer David Weinberg won two awards in the 2013 Boxing Writer's Association of America national contest, the BWAA announced Wednesday.
Weinberg, 55, earned first place in event coverage for his story on the Darren Barker-Daniel Geale middleweight world championship fight at Revel Casino-Hotel on Aug. 17, 2013. Barker barely avoided suffering a knockout, then rebounded to win the 12-round fight via split decision.
Weinberg also received an honorable mention in short feature (less than 1,750 words) for his story about the relationship between local musician Chris Jay and former Russian heavyweight contender Magomed Abdusalamov.
This marks the eighth time in the last 13 years Weinberg has won at least one award in the organization's annual writing contest known as The Bernie's.
Weinberg, a member of The Press sports staff since 1986, will be honored with the other winners at the BWAA's 89th annual convention in Las Vegas on May 1.
