The sixth and final day of the Atlantic City Race Course's annual Turf Festival in Hamilton Township was canceled Wednesday due to bad racing conditions from the rain.

The seven canceled races included the $50,000-added Tony Gatto Dream Big Stakes.

"We're disappointed to cut our 2014 Turf Festival short," said Mary Jo Couts, director of operations at the track, in a news release. "However, safety comes first, and our riders and horses are tremendously valued. The turf was checked by track officials first thing this morning and the conditions were deemed unsafe due to the weather. We err on the side of safety and Sal Sinatra, director of racing, made the call to cancel racing."

The news release also said that plans are underway for the Turf Festival to return to Atlantic City Race Course in 2015.

The announced attendance at Sunday's races was 12,653, the second-largest crowd at ACRC in the last 25 years or so. It was topped only by last year's crowd of 13,258.
