Three local high school baseball teams - St. Augustine Prep, Buena Regional and Vineland - earned invites to the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic.
The 16-team, single-elimination tournament starts Saturday and features many of South Jersey's top teams. The event is named after Hartmann, the former coach of Eastern and a fixture on the South Jersey baseball scene. The Classic began in 1974. Only three CAL teams - Millville (1978); Sacred Heart (2008); and Buena Regional (2011) - have won the event.
St. Augustine (12-4) and Buena (15-3) earned automatic invitations because they are the current leaders of the Cape-Atlantic League American and National conferences, respectively.
Vineland (13-3) received an at-large berth. The Fighting Clan split two games with Buena Regional and had impressive wins over Holy Spirit and Camden Catholic.
The tournament field and schedule were announced Sunday night. A panel of sportswriters from media outlets, including The Press, that cover South Jersey baseball selected the at-large teams.
Saturday's first-round schedule is below. The quarterfinals will be played May 18. The semifinals and final will be played May 19.
