From Press staff reports

Richard Stockton College’s Phil Birnbaum was named the USTA Middle States New Jersey District Coach of the Year for 2012, the school said Monday.

Birnbaum led the Ospreys to a 9-1 record, including 5-1— good for second place — in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Stockton finished its fall schedule with six consecutive wins, and Birnbaum was named the NJAC Coach of the Year in November.

Birnbaum, the only coach in the 12-year history of the Stockton team, also won the United States Tennis Association’s district award in 2003. His career record is 113-43. The Ospreys have had only one losing season.

The New Jersey District is one of six that comprise the USTA’s Middle States region. Birnbaum will receive his award at a district ceremony on April 21 in Mount Laurel.
