Ten-time world champion Kelly Slater was among eight surfers who qualified for the quarterfinals out of their heats on Day 3 of the Quiksilver Pro New York in Long Island, N.Y., on Thursday.
Taj Burrow, Josh kerr, Alejo Muniz and Owen Wright each won a three-person fourth-round heat to earn spots in the quarterfinals.
Slater, 39, who leads the Association of Surfing Professionals standings through five of 11 events this season, was one of four surfers who had to win head-to-head fifth-round matchups to advance. Jadson Andre, Heitor Alves and Julian Wilson also won in the fifth round.
Hurricane Katia produced 3- to 5-foot waves for Thursday's competition.
Organizers will meet at 6:30 a.m. today to assess conditions for a possible 7:30 a.m. start to the quarterfinals today.
