Middle Township High School senior boys tennis player Jeremy Novick improved to 15-1 while reaching his first Cape-Atlantic League individual tournament final Wednesday at Vineland High School.
Novick, the Panthers' first-singles player, beat Hammonton's Pete Lancetta, last year's runner-up, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals. Novick had won in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
In the final, at 4 p.m. today, Novick will face Vineland senior Rahi Patel (12-6), who also will play in his first CAL final. Patel won two three-set matches to get there, including a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over defending champion Zack Novick, Jeremy's twin brother.
The doubles final will feature Vineland's Darren Tomasso and Nick Mayo (14-3) against Hammonton's Stevie Salvatore and Dave Donio-Enscoe. The last Vineland team to win was Jay Roth and Tim Dovnarsky in 2007. Hammonton has not won a doubles title since at least 1998, which is as far back as The Press' archives go.
Salvatore and Donio-Enscoe are 9-1 since teaming up April 19. Their only loss came to Tomasso and Mayo, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. But the Hammonton duo beat Tomasso and Mayo in its first match of the season at the Moorestown Classic.
