The 16th annual Ocean Drive Marathon will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at Beach Avenue, south of Perry Street, in Cape May and go 26.2 miles through the Cape May County seashore towns to the Promenade at JFK Boulevard in Sea Isle City.
The event also has a 10-mile race and a 5K race.
The marathon, a road and Boardwalk event, begins in Cape May and goes over four drawbridges along Ocean Drive. The runners go through the fishing port of Lower Township into Wildwood island, where they run the length of the Boardwalk. The race continues through Stone Harbor and Avalon to Townsends Inlet, and finally to Sea Isle City.
A.J. Kelly of Altoona, Pa., 31, a former runner at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was the 2013 marathon's overall winner in a record time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, 29.8 seconds. Lauren Sanders, 26, of Wyomissing, Pa., was 24th overall and the women's champion in 3:10:01.8.
The Ocean Drive 10-miler begins with the marathon but ends at 18th Avenue on the Boardwalk in North Wildwood. The Ocean Drive 5K starts at 10 a.m. at JFK Boulevard and has an out-and-back course.
