The 52nd annual Long Beach Island Lifeguard Tournament, a two-day event with 17 races in all, will be held at 6 p.m. today and Saturday at the 15th Street beach in Ship Bottom.

The teams competing: Barnegat Light, the four-time defending team champion, Surf City, Harvey Cedars and host Ship Bottom. Long Beach Township and Beach Haven won't be there.

Nearly all of the races are out to markers 500 feet from shore and back. The races can be easily seen by the fans.

This year, a surfboat relay race has been added, and will be today's last race.

Today's other races are the mile row, the 1,500-foot paddle race, the buoy rescue, the paddle relay, the women's doubles row, the surfboat rescue and the iron man race.

Saturday's races are the 1,000-foot doubles row, the 1,000-foot swim, the 1,000-foot women's swim, the paddle rescue, the line pull, the singles row, the mixed doubles row, the 2,000-foot paddle race, and the surf dash.

Barnegat Light scored 96 points to win last year, and Surf City was second with 78.
