The West Cumberland softball team continued to impress at the Junior League World Series in Kirkland, Wash., moving to 3-0 and first place in their pool after a 3-2 win over Mexicali, Mexico, on Tuesday.
The team of 13- to 15-year-olds, mostly from Bridgeton, is the only undefeated squad in Pool B of the tournament.
Tuesday's game was scoreless until the top of the third inning, when Shelby Baxter, 14, scored on a fielder's choice.
Gracie Meyer, 13, scored in the top of the fourth to give West Cumberland a 2-0 lead, and she scored again in the sixth on an RBI double by Jaclyn Lesher, 14.
Mexicali scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off of two Cumberland errors.
"They didn't rally, we rallied for them," Cumberland coach Gary Woodruff said of the two errors. "They just couldn't keep (things) easy. ... (But) they played hard and they didn't get rattled."
West Cumberland held on as Alyssa Waddington got the win, giving up two hits and a walk over fine innings. She also was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Haley Hulitt, 14, shut down Mexicali in the sixth and seventh innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
West Cumberland has one more game in pool play today at 5 p.m. EDT against Emilia, Italy, the Europe and Africa representative. The quarterfinals begin Thursday.
