Owen Wright beat 10-time world champion Kelly Slater in the final round to win the Quiksilver Pro New York in Long Island, N.Y., on Friday.

Wright, a 21-year-old Australia native, won the $300,000 first-place prize in the inaugural event. He also moved up to No. 2 in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) world rankings behind the 39-year-old Slater.

Hurricane Katia produced 3- to 5-foot waves for competition Friday. Wright and Slater defeated Taj Burrow and Alejo Muniz, respectively, in the semifinals.
