The Hammonton Junior League baseball team (14 and under) defeated Lower Cape May 18-13 on Wednesday to advance to the District 16 final.
Hammonton put itself in an hole after giving up eight runs in the first inning on five hits. But they came back to score three in the first and second, two in the third and five in the fourth inning.
Lower Cape May scored four runs in the sixth, but Hammonton put up five runs of their own in the inning. The two teams combined for 24 hits.
Matt Tucker pitched 5 innings in relief, striking out seven to get the win for Hammonton, while Matt Angeline got the save. Vinny Piccari was 4-for-4 with five runs scored. Ryan Stansbury and Malachi Winters each had two hits and four RBIs combined.
Hammonton will face the winner of Lower Cape May vs. Middle Township on Monday in the final. They must defeat Hammonton twice to win the title.
District 16 11-12 baseball
Linwood 6, Absecon 2: Hunter Rich struck out nine in 4 innings of three-hit ball. Connor Neiderer finished the game by striking out three in 1 innings. John Paytas had an RBI single, Michael Mitnick had a two-run single and Conor Ogborn was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Linwood.
Absecon's Aaron Ardente hit a home run.
Linwood plays Margate at 7 p.m. tonight at Hammonton.
