The Egg Harbor Township High School football team will try to do something Saturday that no team has accomplished this season.
Slow down Toms River East's Nico Steriti.
EHT and East meet in a South Jersey Group IV semifinal. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine Prep because EHT's field is still being renovated. Both teams are undefeated. EHT is No. 4 in The Press' Elite 11. East is No. 5.
Steriti is one of the top players in the Shore Conference. He has rushed for 1,443 yards and 22 touchdowns. EHT and East are similar teams. Both rely on their speed. Both have stingy defenses. EHT is trying to reach its first South Jersey final since it lost to Woodrow Wilson in the 2001 Group III title game.
Toms River East is trying to reach its first sectional title since it lost to Brick Township in the 1981 Group IV championship game.
Saturday's winner won't have it easy.
The South Jersey Group IV field is not for the faint of heart. Cherokee and Williamstown meet in the other semifinal tonight. Those teams are also undefeated.
Key players for Toms River East: Charles Diskin, QB, 35-of-53 for 510 yards and nine touchdowns; Nico Steriti, RB/DB, 183 carries for 1,443 yards and 22 touchdowns and four interceptions on defense; Mario Steriti, RB, 68 carries for 515 yards and five touchdowns; Erik Rokisky, LB, 55 tackles.
Key players for EHT: Tejay Johnson, RB/DB, 93 carries for 649 yards; Scott Miller, QB/DB, 50-of-83 for 716 yards and six touchdowns; Zach Agostino, RB/LB, 61 carries for 434 yards; Stephan Thomas, RB/DB; Chris Santiago, LB; Joe Magosin, WR; Dominic Moody, LB.
Keys to victory: Both teams are fast with stingy defenses. Nico Steriti is one of the state's top running backs. EHT has more people capable of making the big play in Johnson, Magosin, Miller, Thomas and Agostino. Both teams favor the run, but the game could come to which team throws the ball better.
