Former Press All-Star running back David Hood was charged with assaulting two women Tuesday in Orono, Maine, where he goes to college on an athletic scholarship.

Hood, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Maine, was charged with two misdemeanor Class D counts of assault, though he was not arrested. The charges could carry a fine and up to one year in jail. Hood has a court date in December, at which time he will enter a plea.

Hood was at a party with a group of friends late Saturday night into Sunday morning, police Capt. Josh Ewing said. An incident occurred involving two unidentified 20-year-old women from Orono, Ewing said.

The two groups exchanged words inside the party, but then Hood and his group left, Ewing said.

When the women left the party, Hood and his friends were outside and more words were exchanged, followed by an altercation, Ewing said.

"Hood reportedly punched them both," Ewing added.

Hood did not respond to a message left for him Wednesday afternoon.

The University of Maine suspended him for this Saturday's game against Towson for violating the student-athlete Code of Conduct policy, university spokesperson Joe Carr said. An investigation is underway through the Dean of Students to see if there were any violations of the university's Code of Conduct policy, which is separate from the student-athlete policy.

More sanctions could be placed on Hood once that investigation is completed.

Hood transferred from Atlantic City to Absegami and played just a few games during his junior year for the Braves. But in his senior season, Hood ran for 1,091 yards on 149 carries (7.3 yards a game) with 13 touchdowns and was named a Press first-team All-Star.

Hood has not appeared in a game for the Black Bears this season. Maine, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision school, is 3-6 and 2-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
