An abbreviated weekend of high school football because of Hurricane Sandy begins at 7 p.m. today when St. Joseph travels to Mainland Regional.
Only one other local game is scheduled this weekend. Lower Cape May Regional will play at Cedar Creek at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The storm caused all other games to be postponed to next week.
Both of this weekend's games have meaning.
St. Joseph (7-0), which has already clinched the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference, can add to what already has been a historic season.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in The Press Elite 11 and have won 25 straight games, dating back to a 35-0 loss to Holy Spirit on Oct. 1, 2010.
Mainland (2-5) comes off a 40-16 loss to Atlantic City. Mainland has struggled to score all season.
The Mustangs have scored no more than one touchdown in six of their seven games.
St. Joe coach Paul Sacco said Thursday night his team has had a hectic week. Some of his players lost electricity and missed practice. The Wildcats barely practiced because of the storm.
"I don't ever remember playing after one practice and walk-through," Sacco said. "It's tough, but it's been tough for everybody. We'll be as ready as we can be."
Cedar Creek (7-0) needs a win against Lower Cape May to stay tied with St. Augustine Prep for the CAL National Conference lead. Cedar Creek, which is in just its second season of varsity football, already has clinched a South Jersey Group II playoff spot.
Lower (1-6) lost to Ocean City 7-6 last weekend. Saturday's game will feature two of the region's most prolific quarterbacks.
Damon Mitchell of Cedar Creek has thrown for 13 touchdowns and run for 11 .
Mitchell has verbally committed to attend Georgia Tech on a scholarship.
Lower Cape May Regional quarterback Frank Zeigler has rushed for 1,000 yards.
Note: The Lacey Township High School football team will play Brick Memorial on Friday, Nov. 9 at a time to be determined.
