Southern Regional will look to running back Abe Gonzalez, who has rushed for 841 yards, to help clinch a playoff spot against Toms River East.

The Middle Township High School football team will try to earn its first playoff berth since 2004 tonight.

Middle (4-3) will qualify for the South Jersey bracket with a win over Buena Regional (4-4). The teams kickoff at 7 p.m. at Middle's Memorial Field in Cape May Court House.

The top eight teams in each enrollment group with the most power points at the conclusion of this weekend's games will make the postseason. Teams earn power points based on their wins and their opponents' enrollment and victories.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association will make the playoff fields official Monday.

The playoffs begin the weekend of Nov. 16-17. The championship games will be played the second weekend of December.

All of this weekend's games were originally scheduled last week but Hurricane Sandy postponed them.

National Conference

Buena Regional (4-4) at Middle Township (4-3)

7 p.m. today: Middle's three losses are to teams with a combined record of 19-3. Middle rushed for 367 yards in a 25-12 win over Bridgeton on Oct. 26. Running back Nigel Case carried 17 times for 174 yards. He has rushed 62 times for 642 yards this season. Buena ended a four-game losing streak with a 53-0 win over Pleasantville on Oct. 26.

Pleasantville (0-7) at St. Augustine Prep (6-1)

6 p.m. today: St. Augustine needs a win to remain tied with Cedar Creek for the conference lead. The Hermits have clinched a state Non-Public IV playoff berth. St. Augustine running back Calvin Cass leads the CAL in rushing with 1,404 yards and in scoring with 158 points.

Vineland (2-5) at Bridgeton (4-4)

7 p.m. today: Bridgeton is in contention for a South Jersey Group III playoff spot. The Bulldogs lost to Middle Township 25-12 on Oct. 26. Bridgeton has not won or lost two games in a row all season. Running back Stefon Bowman (120 carries for 654 yards) leads the Bridgeton offense. Vineland also features one of the area's top running backs in Isaiah Spencer, who has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this season.


Egg Harbor Township (3-4) at Ocean City (2-5)

7 p.m. today: Ocean City has won two straight. Red Raiders running back Frank Woolley has rushed for more than 700 yards and scored seven touchdowns. EHT running back and linebacker Matt Clayton has rushed for 510 yards and made 32 tackles.

American Conference

Oakcrest (0-7) at Holy Spirit (4-3)

7 p.m. today: Holy Spirit has clinched a state Non-Public III playoff berth, but the Spartans need a win to boost their seeding. Spirit has clinched at least the No. 3 or even the No. 2 seed. Linebacker Jeff Steeb and defensive back A.J. Dawson lead a Spirit defense that has allowed six points or less in five games this season. Four of those contests have been wins. Oakcrest linebacker Brandon Bell, who is headed to Penn State, has made 60 tackles in five games.

Shore Conference

Toms River East (1-6) at Southern Regional (5-2)

1 p.m. Saturday: Southern, No. 9 in The Press Elite 11, needs a win to enhance its South Jersey Group V playoff hopes. Linebacker Nick Munafo (51 tackles) leads a Southern defense that has held opponents to a touchdown or less in four of Southern's five wins. Running back Abe Gonzalez (162 carries for 841 yards) sparks the Rams offense. There will be no admission charge. Instead, volunteers will be collecting donations for students of both schools who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Red Bank (2-5) at Barnegat (4-3)

7 p.m. today: Barnegat has clinched a South Jersey Group III playoff spot. The Bengals have won three of their last four games. Barnegat quarterback Cinjun Erskine has run for six touchdowns in just three games after becoming eligible since transferring from Holy Spirit.

Lacey Township (8-0) at Brick Memorial (5-3)

1 p.m. Saturday: Lacey has already the No. 2 seed in the South Jersey Group IV playoffs and the Shore Conference A South title. Lacey wide receiver Bill Belford has caught 23 passes for 395 yards and nine touchdowns. Brick Memorial has dropped three straight after a 5-0 start.

West Jersey Football League

Cumberland Regional (3-4) at Delsea Regional (7-1)

7 p.m. today: Cumberland would clinch a South Jersey Group III playoff spot with an upset of Delsea, No. 6 in the Elite 11. Cumberland features running back De'Han Milledge (801 rushing yards) and tight end/defensive end Gabe Hemighaus (295 receiving yards, 51/2 sacks).
