Absegami High School picked up its first win of the season on the feet of Ben Martin as the Braves (1-1) defeated Vineland 31-14 on Friday night. Martin put up 113 yards on the ground and found the end zone twice on 16- and 25-yard runs. David Hood also had a big night on the ground, rushing for 143 yards and a score.
The Braves jumped out to an early lead, putting 14 points on the board in the first quarter. Martin scored first, and Dylan Ross hit Rupert Mills for a touchdown on a 35-yard pass. Ross finished the day 4-for-8 for 78 yards.
Vineland (0-2) got on the board in the second with a Brian Winchester 6-yard run, but the point-after failed. Absegami countered with a Tom Macauley field goal. The third quarter belonged to the Braves, with touchdowns by Martin and Hood.
In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Clan recorded a safety and scored a touchdown on a 6-yard run from quarterback Darrius Flowers. Winchester finished with 32 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Flowers was 9-for-15 for 43 yards with an interception.
