PLEASANTVILLE - The Ocean City High School football team gave its disappointing season a better ending with a 34-15 victory over winless Pleasantville in their annual Thanksgiving Day game Thursday.
Senior quarterback Logan McGuigan threw three touchdown passes before halftime as the Red Raiders built a 28-7 lead.
McGuigan opened the scoring with a 44-yard touchdown pass to tight end Marc Impagliazzo in the first quarter. McGuigan (11-for-20 passes for 216 yards overall) also connected with wide receiver Mike Coccodrilli on two touchdown passes before halftime.
The Red Raiders finished the season 3-7, Pleasantville 0-10.
Ocean City beat the Greyhounds for the fourth year in a row and hold a 44-40-6 edge in the series, which began in 1917.
"It was a pretty tough game for a while and it woke everyone up," McGuigan said of the long TD pass to Impagliazzo.
"It was a frustrating season, but we went out with a bang to send it off."
McGuigan tossed to Impagliazzo, who beat a defender on the left side for the game's first points with 6 minutes, 55 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Coccodrilli's 14-yard touchdown catch a little less than four minutes later also went to the left.
"The defense was pressuring us, but the safety wasn't adjusting to us," Impagliazzo, the son of coach Mark Impagliazzo, said. "That left a gap wide open once we got off the line."
Down 14-0, Pleasantville cut the lead in half with a 12-play, 76-yard march to a score. On fourth-and-goal at the Ocean City 2-yard line, Greyhounds quarterback Jacob Haines (121 yards passing, 101 yards rushing) rolled to his right and flipped a pass to tight end Isaiah Haskins for a touchdown.
The Red Raiders scored less than two minutes later to re-establish a 14-point lead. McGuigan hit Coccodrilli with a 20-yard scoring pass on the right side. O.C. made it 28-7 on its next possession when senior running back Craig Schultheis scored his first touchdown of the season off left tackle from 9 yards out.
"I had a hamstring injury this season, so I mostly blocked a lot," Schultheis said. "The line, (guards) Nick Briggs and Kevin Day, really opened the hole. It feels real good to get a touchdown."
Ocean City's final touchdown, fullback Ryan Murphy's 2-yard burst, was set up by McGuigan's 43-yard pass to tight end Joe Cosgrove.
Ocean City gets to keep the Mike Slaveski-Bob Thomas Memorial Award, which goes to the winning team each year. The award honors the two late coaches. Slaveski coached Ocean City and Thomas was a Pleasantville coach.
"The kids worked real hard this year, but we had some tough luck with injuries," the elder Impagliazzo said. "Turnovers have hurt us this year, too, but we didn't have any today. We're extremely happy to end the season with a win, and keep the trophy."
The Greyhounds' Haines went 2 yards up the middle for the final touchdown.
"I thought we executed well, but there were a couple dropped passes and fumbles," Pleasantville coach B.J. Burch said. "We only played four seniors today and most of the team returns next year. ... I told the team afterward to use (this season) as a learning tool, to not get down but to come back stronger."
