Running back Jon Goldsboro of Arthur P. Schalick High School ran for two first-quarter touchdowns Thursday to help the Cougars beat host Cumberland Regional 21-0 in their annual Thanksgiving Day football game.
Schalick upped its series lead to 5-3 in a rivalry that began in 2002. Cumberland had won two straight over the Cougars. Schalick, the Tri-County Conference Classic Division champion, finished the season 7-3, while the rebuilding Colts ended 2-8.
"They're a very good team," Cumberland coach Tom Lake said. "They came in very focused, very physical."
Goldsboro scored on runs of 25 and 2 yards in the first quarter. He also was 3-for-3 in extra points on the day. Schalick's other TD came on Danny Thomas' 28-yard pass to running back Kyle Philo.
Goldsboro finished with 96 yards on 16 carries, while teammate Michael Johnson led with 13 carries for 125 yards.
"We just weren't able to match their offensive proficiency with our own," Lake said. "We expected to be able to move the ball. We were able to move the ball in fits and starts, but we weren't able to sustain anything. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the opposition."
Lake said Cougars coach Seth Brown put together a better plan than he did, and that the Schalick players then went out and did a really nice job executing it.
"I think I got outcoached," Lake said. "It's my job to find a combination to put points on the board, and I failed to do that today."
Cumberland freshman quarterback Steve Garron completed five passes for 56 yards. Colts junior running back Charles Clark finished with 10 rushes for 30 yards.
Cumberland went 13-7 the previous two seasons, but this year's team began with only a couple of players with substantial varsity playing experience, Lake said. The good news, he added, is that most of his players will be back next fall.
And they're already showing an eagerness to start their offseason program.
Lake said that as they turned in their jerseys and gear, all his players were asking, "Coach, what day are we opening the weight room?"
