Why this game is special: This contest is dubbed “The Anchor Bowl.” The winner gets a plaque created in 1996 that features an anchor taken from a boat owned by the father of former Lower Cape May Regional coach Bill Garrison. Middle won last year 31-21 and leads the series 8-6 since it became known as the Anchor Bowl.

Lower update: The Caper Tigers, 1-29 the past three seasons, turned around their program this year. Lower qualified for the South Jersey Group II playoffs, losing to Barnegat 29-28 in the first round on Nov. 25. Lower quarterback Mike Mulligan has thrown for 970 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Middle update: The Panthers come off a 26-6 loss to Sterling in a Nov. 12 consolation game. Middle’s only victory was a 22-20 win over Pleasantville on Oct. 22.
