One of the region's most passionate rivalries highlights the second weekend of the high school football schedule.

Holy Spirit plays at St. Joseph at noon Saturday in Hammonton. The two teams are both defending state champions - St. Joe in Non-Public I and Holy Spirit in Non-Public II. St. Joe is No. 1 in The Press Elite 11.

The teams first met in 2000. The two parochial schools sometimes compete to attract the same players. St. Joe leads the series 9-4. Both teams judge their season in part on how they perform against each other.

American Conference

Holy Spirit (0-1) at St. Joseph (1-0)

Noon, Saturday: St. Joe quarterback Anthony Giagunto threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns in last Saturday's 37-29 win over Absegami. Spirit running back Talib Gerald showed outstanding speed in the Spartans' 22-20 overtime loss to Hammonton. Gerald scored on an 86-yard kickoff return and a 25-yard run.

Atlantic City (0-1) at Egg Harbor Township (1-0)

7 p.m. today (97.3): Atlantic City running back Domeneek Brown-Hurd rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns in last week's 24-19 loss to Millville. Curtis Fitzpatrick and Matt Clayton ran for touchdowns as EHT opened with a 14-9 win over Oakcrest.

Oakcrest (0-1) at Hammonton (1-0)

7 p.m. today: Hammonton is No. 4 in The Press Elite 11. The Blue Devils relied on twin running backs David and Dominic Williams in their 22-20 win over Holy Spirit last Friday. David ran for 64 yards, while Dominic rushed for 84 yards. Hammonton standout wide receiver, defensive back and kicker Alex Padovani is out eight weeks with a fractured femur that occured in the first quarter of the Holy Spirit game. Oakcrest quarterback Quaashie Jetter ran for 110 yards and threw for 104 yards in last Friday's 14-9 loss to Egg Harbor Township.

National Conference

Buena Regional (1-0) at Ocean City (0-1)

7 p.m. today 98.7 FM: Freshman running back Quadir Albright rushed for 77 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Buena's 20-6 season opening win over Vineland. Standout Buena running back Luv'Uan Scott missed the opener with an ankle sprain but is expected to return tonight. Ocean City lost its opener 47-0 to Cedar Creek.

Pleasantville (0-1) at Vineland (0-1)

7 p.m. today: Isaiah Spencer scored Vineland's only touchdown in a 20-6 loss to Buena Regional on a 43-yard run. Pleasantville lost its opener to Mainland Regional 28-0.

St. Augustine Prep (1-0) at Lower Cape May Reg. (0-1)

7 p.m. today: St. Augustine will try to build on its impressive 43-8 win over Middle Township last Friday. St. Augustine running back Calvin Cass rushed for 153 yards. Hermits quarterback Alex Hughes threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns in his first varsity start. Lower quarterback Frank Ziegler rushed for 215 yards on 31 carries in Lower's 25-6 loss to Bridgeton.

Bridgeton (1-0) at Cedar Creek (1-0)

1 p.m. Saturday: Bridgeton quarterback Ronald Williams threw for a touchdown and ran for another score as Bridgeton beat Lower Cape May 25-6 last week. Bridgeton running back Stefon Bowman rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Cedar Creek lived up to its billing as the conference favorite with a 47-0 win over Ocean City last Friday. Gary Melton and Nolan Seward each scored two touchdowns in the win.


Absegami (0-1) at Middle Township (0-1)

7 p.m. today: Absegami showed a potent offense in last Saturday's 37-29 loss to St. Joe. Braves running back David Hood scored three touchdowns, all of which covered at least 60 yards. Quarterback Mike Dolan threw two touchdown passes. Middle opened with a 43-8 loss to St. Augustine Prep.

Shore Conference

Toms River South (0-1) at Southern Regional (1-0)

7 p.m. today (105.7 FM): Southern, No. 7 in The Press Elite 11, opened with a 28-0 win over Freehold Township. Quarterback Dan Higgins threw two touchdown passes. Wide receiver/defensive back Mike Gesicki caught a touchdown pass and returned a fumble for another score.

Manchester Township (0-1) at Barnegat (0-1)

7 p.m. today: Barnegat tries to bounce back after a 21-0 loss to Holmdel. Manchester opened with a 30-22 loss to Ocean Township.

Pinelands Regional (0-1) at Pt. Pleasant Borough (1-0)

7 p.m. today: Another tough opponent for Pinelands, which opened with a 58-8 loss to Lacey Township. Quarterback Chris Oliphant ran for three touchdowns as Pt. Pleasant beat Monmouth 27-14.

Toms River North (1-0) at Lacey Township (1-0)

1 p.m. Saturday: Lacey is No. 10 in The Press Elite 11. The Lions beat Pinelands Regional 58-8 as quarterback Tom Kelly threw four touchdown passes. Toms River North opened with an impressive 35-7 win over Howell.

West Jersey Football League

Cherry Hill West (0-1) at Cumberland Regional (0-1)

7 p.m. today: De'Han Milledge rushed for 111 yards on 20 carries in Cumberland's 33-0 loss to Deptford. Cumberland beat Cherry Hill West 35-19 in a consolation game last Nov. 11.

Wildwood (1-0) at Riverside (0-1)

7 p.m. today: Wesley Hills ran for 142 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Wildwood to a 16-8 win over Clayton. Riverside opened with a 55-12 loss to Burlington City. Wildwood beat Riverside 38-26 last Nov. 11. Wildwood would equal last season's win total with a victory tonight.
