HAMMONTON - Running back Dave Williams, with an assist from twin Dominic Williams, led the Hammonton High School football team to a good beginning to the second half of its season on Friday.
Hammonton, coming off its bye week, blanked Mainland Regional 28-0 as senior Dave Williams scored three touchdowns.
Williams scored on runs of 2 and 50 yards, and caught a 26-yard TD pass from quarterback Christian Mortellite. Dominic Williams added a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and the Blue Devils coasted to the win.
Hammonton improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference. Mainland dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-4 American.
"Coach (Pete Lancetta) reminded us the last two weeks in practice that we're 3-2 and got to make the (South Jersey Group IV) playoffs," said Dave Williams, 17, an Atco resident. "We did what we had to do and prepared for Mainland. The offensive line did what it had to do and the offense stepped it up."
Dave Williams ran for 123 yards on 10 carries, and he caught two passes for 29 yards.
Dominic Williams finished with 17 rushes for 63 yards, and caught one pass for 40 yards. Mortellite completed 6-of-10 passes for 131 yards and was intercepted once.
"It was a good performance," said Lancetta about his team. "We improved over the last two weeks. You never know how kids are going to react going in a bye week after a loss (to Atlantic City 19-7 on Oct. 5) but they worked hard. We gave them some time off, too. We worked on our passing game.
"David and Dominic are great running backs. I've known them since they played for the Atco Lions in seventh and eighth grade."
On its first possession, Mainland marched right down the field from its own 42-yard line, but Hammonton ended the drive by stopping quarterback Dylan Swenson on a 4th down at the half-yard line.
Dave Williams was playing defensive end at the time, though the run by Swenson went to the other side of the line.
"They came out pretty tough," said Dave Willliams. "I couldn't believe we stopped them."
Dave Williams scored his first touchdown early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run on the left side. He gained nine yards on the previous play.
Dom Williams set up the next TD with a 40-yard reception to the Mainland 26. Mortellite passed to Dave Williams for a touchdown on the next play with 2 minutes, 28 seconds before halftime. Keith Salmon's extra point made it 12-0.
Hammonton took command on its first possession of the second half as Dave Williams ran 50 yards for the third touchdown. Dominic Williams' touchdown run came with 3:41 left in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils didn't allow Mainland to get close to the goal line again. Running back Brett Edmunds led the Mustangs with 86 yards rushing on 12 carries.
"I'm disappointed with our effort," said Mainland coach Bob Coffey. "We'll see if we can regroup. Hammonton has a very good defense.
"At the half-yard line it was a game of will, and they won that game. With the size of our line we should get a half-yard."
