The Sacred Heart High School softball team was ready to play for a state championship today.

The Lions will have to wait 25 hours, however.

Heavy rains Friday forced the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association to postpone all state baseball and softball finals to Sunday.

Sacred Heart (31-3) will meet Immaculate Conception (28-2) 3 p.m. Sunday at Toms River East.

The game was originally scheduled to be played 2:30 p.m. today at Toms River East.

There is higher than normal anticipation for the contest because it will be the last sporting event in Sacred Heart history. The Vineland school is closing this month because of low enrollment.

“You’re ready to play and you want to play,” Sacred Heart coach Les Olson said Friday. “To get things put on hold is a little bit of a disappointment.”

Sacred Heart beat  Immaculate Conception (Bergen County) 3-1 in last year’s state final. Sacred Heart practiced indoors Friday and hopes to practice outdoors this afternoon.

“We did the normal stuff,” Olson said. “Just some hitting and working on the different pitches we might see.”
