Damiana was taken down in the first period in first wrestlebacks by Nicholas D’Uva of Parsippany Hills. But Damiana escaped, earned a takedown of his own and then pinned D’Uva with 10 seconds left in the first.
Going for a desperation takedown in the next wrestleback with time winding down, Damiana was taken down and lost a 5-2 decision to Wayne Valley’s Anthony Landberg.
Friday prequarterfinals
In the prequarterfinals, Cory Damiana wrestled a tight match with Moorestown’s Tyreek Smith before falling to a 6-5 decision. Damiana was taken down in the last five seconds. Damiana controlled the match and had two takedowns in the first to take an early lead.
Friday preliminaries
Cory Damiana traded escape points in the first and second periods with West Deptford’s Jake Regina. Damiana, who recorded a takedown in the third, was taken down at the buzzer but earned a 5-4 decision on a locked hands penalty to win the bout.

Highlight wins: Damiana won a pair of matches against state qualifiers in one day on Jan. 26. Damiana won a 2-1 decision against Moorestown’s Tyreek Smith and a 10-8 decision against Matt Correnti of Holy Cross.
Seed: Unseeded in the top bracket.
Back points: Damiana is making his second trip to states and will open this season with top bracket No. 2 seed Jake Regina of Rutherford in the prelims. If Damiana can get past Regina he would likely face Moorestown’s Smith.
