On a really rainy day, real golf isn't much fun.
But the kids can have a great time playing miniature golf while it's raining - and stay dry doing it - if you find a miniature-golf course with a roof over it.
On Ocean City's Boardwalk, Gillian's Wonderland Pier just opened an indoor mini-golf course, Wonder's Silly Sea Quest, in April. And while Melissa Carr, in marketing for Gillian's, says it's too early to be sure how the new course will do in wet weather - "It hasn't rained much lately," she says, not complaining - years of history suggest that indoor golf will be a big hit on bad days.
"I'm sure it will do well, because our inside rides do awesome (business) in the rain," Carr says.
Two blocks south on the Boardwalk, 15-year-old Ciarra Dougherty from Philadelphia was finishing up Under The Sea Miniature Golf on a sunny day this week, but she's sure kids would enjoy the covered course in the rain. She had never played miniature golf inside before, and she liked the black-light setup that casts the whole course - everything from balls to holes to hazards - in a neon glow.
There are a few other local mini-golf courses built under cover of a roof, but one more thing Dougherty and two friends liked about Under The Sea was the coupon they found in an Ocean City tourist guide for a free game of mini-golf at the black-light course. - Martin DeAngelis
