A Lower Township man allegedly passed a car stopped at a crosswalk and then hit a pedestrian and killed her dog on Tuesday, Middle Township Police said.

Pedro Jimenez-Avila, 32, of Villas, was driving east on Stone Harbor Boulevard shortly after 10 a.m. when police said he swerved to avoid a car stopped at a crosswalk near the 96th Street bridge. He ran off the road to avoid hitting the car and struck Regina Mullen, 38, of Philadelphia.

Mullen’s dog died on impact, and she was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center by Stone Harbor Rescue. Police did not immediately provide her condition.

Jimenez-Avila was charged with failure to maintain lane and careless driving. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
