Dan Skeldon's Weather Forecast

Saturday the hottest day of a heat wave that lasts into next week

Allow me to try to make you feel better about this weekend’s heat. Five years ago today, our temperatures soared to a record high of 105 degrees. When coupled with unbearably high humidity levels, the heat index jumped to a dangerously hot 122 degrees, the highest ever measured in South Jersey.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for all of South Jersey this weekend and says that it will likely be extended into early next week as well.

SATURDAY► Very hot and humid with partly sunny skies, and perhaps a late-day thunderstorm.  The heat index may climb to 100-105 degrees.  Highs in the low 90s at the shore, mid to upper 90s on the mainland with a west-southwest land breeze around 10-20mph.

SUNDAY► Mostly sunny and continued hot and humid, but less so thanks to a light sea-breeze.  Highs in the upper 80s at the shore, low 90s on the mainland.  A light southeast sea-breeze around 10-15mph develops.

MONDAY► Partly sunny, very hot, and humid with highs in the mid 90s on the mainland, around 90 along the shore.  This will be our best chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, but certainly not an all day rain.  The heat index may again climb over 100 degrees.  South-southwest winds around 10-15mph.

TUESDAY► Partly sunny and continued hot and humid with highs in the low to mid 90s, shore and mainland alike with a southwest breeze ahead of a weak cold front.  Perhaps a pop-up storm, but mainly dry.

LATER NEXT WEEK► The heat and humidity don't disappear, but will ease slightly.  Partly sunny skies with more of a sea-breeze Wednesday and Thursday will probably keep highs around 85-90.  A few thunderstorms are possible by Friday.
