Deaths from heart disease declining among rheumatoid arthritis patients

Rheumatoid arthritis patients are twice as likely as the average person to develop heart disease, but a new study shows efforts to prevent heart problems and diagnose and treat heart disease early may be paying off. Despite the heightened danger, deaths from cardiovascular disease among people with rheumatoid arthritis are declining, the research found. The study was among Mayo Clinic research presented recently at the American College of Rheumatology's annual meeting in San Francisco.

Aging and aches

Mary Paterson, 86, of Cape May Court House, believes she suffered from arthritis before this year, but falling down steps in January only made bad matters worse. "You can't do the things that you used to. I do them anyway. It's a hold up. It holds you back," said Paterson, who added her arthritis has been worse since her fall. "I walk with a walker. I'm going to have an operation soon. ... The fall messed everything up."

Many pain clinics and integrative medicine centers now offer movement-based therapy for pain caused by cancer and cancer treatments, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases and conditions. And Loyola Marymount Uni-versity in Los Angeles offers a three-year yoga-therapy course as part of its yoga studies program.
