7. Ruby’s Diner, Atlantic City: Superburger ($.9.95)

Ruby’s Superburger has a lot going for it. For starters, they aren’t stingy with the toppings. It’s piled nicely with Swiss cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato and something called “Rubysauce,” yet somehow the individual flavors of each manage to stand out — a rarity on a burger this loaded with accoutrements. But the real key to this budget-priced indulgence is the bread. Yes, bread — not bun. Normally a somewhat unwelcomed sight on a burger, the simple sliced sourdough bread on the Superburger makes a star of itself as it comes loaded with parmesan cheese that gets baked into its surface before it hits the grill, adding an almost grilled cheese–like flavor profile to the whole thing. That bit of parmesan stands out more than you would expect, and its saltiness works magic when paired with the mild creaminess of the avocado and the tang of their signature sauce. A real standout.
