Balic Winery, based in Mays Landing, has opened a store in the upper level of the Landis MarketPlace in downtown Vineland.

The store is offering their family winery’s fine wines with a European touch.

The new retail outlet for the winery opened the first week of December. It will stock the signature wines from among the more than 30 kinds that Balic makes, said Bojan Boskovic, wine maker for Balic Winery and nephew of the winery’s founder, Savo Balic.

The store will offer free wine tastings. Debbie Balic, Savo Balic’s daughter, will manage the Landis MarketPlace location.

“We were attracted to Landis MarketPlace by the appeal and popularity of the Amish Market,” Boskovic said.

Savo Balic founded the winery 57 years ago to fulfill a lifelong desire to bring a European accent to American winemaking, the company said in a statement. He was a vine grower from the Adriatic Sea who purchased the vineyard in Mays Landing in the 1950s. A peach orchard as long as 250 years ago, the property became a vineyard in the early 19th century and was planted by descendants of early Mays Landing settlers.

Balic opened his winery in 1966 and brought over Boskovic, a native of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, from Europe in 1993 to assist with the business. Boskovic added his European wine-making knowledge and experience to Balic’s expertise.

“I was brought in on a trial basis for six months, but I’m still here and I love it,” Boskovic said.

“We are proud of the winery’s reputation and heritage. We are the third-oldest operating winery in New Jersey and 259th in the entire country,” he said.

Landis MarketPlace Manager Gary Holloway said Balic Winery in the market’s lineup of vendors adds the winery’s well known name and quality wines, he said.

The Balic Winery store at Lands MarketPlace is open from Thursday through Saturday. The winery’s Mays Landing vineyard and showroom are located at 6623 Route 40 (Harding Highway). Tours and tastings are at the vineyard.
