EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — A new convenience store/gas station chain — one more familiar to residents of Delaware and Maryland than this section of Wawa Country — is coming to the township.
A site plan for Royal Farms was approved last month by the Planning Board for Fire and Tilton roads, on the site of the former Lone Star Steakhouse.
The plan includes a 4,647-square-foot building with eight pump islands and 53 parking spaces and was unanimously approved by the board Feb. 12.
The applicant, 3117 Fire Road Associates LLC, did not return a request for comment.
Royals Farms is headquartered in Baltimore, and its 24-hour convenience stores can be found in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia.

New Jersey’s three locations are all in Camden County, according to the store locator on its website.
Royalfarms.com touts their stores’ “World-Famous Royal Farms Chicken” and their “Western Fries” as well as more traditional convenience store fare such as hot and cold subs, sandwiches and wraps. In addition to take-out food, diners are welcome to use their seating area.
The Lone Star Steakhouse that sat at the intersection was demolished in 2011 but was vacant for several years before that.
The closest Wawa, Royal Farms’ main competitor in the area, is located at the Black Horse Pike and Fire Road. A small Wawa without a gas station in the Tilton Times Plaza at Tilton Road and Hingston Avenue closed last April.
“Any time we get commercial ratables, it’s a benefit to homeowners, because it doesn’t send any students to the school system,” Mayor James “Sonny” McCullough said.
