Cape May's Mad Batter spreads the musical wealth

Make your way to historic Cape May to experience a nightlife scene you'll simply be mad about. The Mad Batter, located at the Carroll Villa Hotel, built in 1882, holds more than just 100 years of history. It also provides countless weekends of entertainment and daily specials.

Kay Busch, the restaurant's manager, has worked there for 11 years, and knows the in and outs of the nightlife scene at this Cape May staple.

"The entertainment appeals to a variety of age groups," she says. "It's appropriate for listening during dinner or enjoying just sitting at the bar and relaxing. For example, Class Act, a husband and wife duo, play jazz, classic standards, easy listening and R&B, while Blondage plays keyboard and fiddle along with vocals. They are known to perform a wide variety of pop, rock, country and oldies."

The Atmosphere: Busch describes the Mad Batter as eclectic, innovative and fun. "The Mad Batter is a comfortable and casual restaurant with a front porch overlooking historic Jackson Street," she says. "The main dining room features a skylight, artwork by local artists, as well as the Mad Batter Bar, while our back garden room features colored- glass windows and a small open garden area with a pond."

Regular Rockers: Some of the acts that frequent the Mad Batter are the Geno White Duo, Jay Bethel, Robin Hippel and Amy Hufana, Blondage, Joe and Mike, and Class Act.

Drink Up, Buttercup: The Mad Batter is known for a long list of specialty cocktails, including the Mad Batter Bloody Mary, made with its own spicy bloody Mary mix, plus its Peach Sangria, Raspberry Lemonade Martini and the Taste Of Paris Martini, which features St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur, pear liqueur and fresh fruit.

Something Special: The Mad Batter offers drink specials such as a daily Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m. featuring half-price drinks - including specialty beers and micro-brews such as Flying Fish and Dogfish Head.
