Sandcastle stadium

The 5,000-seat stadium sat empty from 2009, when the Atlantic City Surf minor league baseball team folded, until last summer, when it hosted a hip-hop concert headlined by Rick Ross. Two proposals announced Tuesday would bring baseball back to the city.

Sandcastle Stadium, the baseball stadium located on Bader Field on Route 40, was officially renamed Surf Stadium by Atlantic City Council at its Wednesday meeting.

Council also approved the execution of a $227,000 contract with Georgia Golf Construction Inc. to install artificial turf at the stadium.

City officials tentatively plan to host a professional baseball series at the vacant site during Labor Day weekend. Turf installation is necessary for that event to happen.
