He left behind two newborn twin girls and a deep hole in the hearts of his many friends and family members. To honor his legacy, his friends and family have created the Walter “Ed” Vizthum Scholarship Fund, a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to benefit incoming freshmen students with a scholarship at Holy Spirit High School.

The first-ever Drink 'n' Shoes Horseshoe Tournament, to be held Saturday, July 14, will support the Walter “Ed” Vizthum Scholarship Fund for incoming freshmen at Holy Spirit High School.

The event will be hosted by friends and family of the late Walter “Ed” Vizthum, who passed away unexpectedly Aug. 28, 2017, when his large heart gave out on him at just 32-years-old, leaving behind many loving family members and friends.

The scholarship fund was created by Vizthum's family and friends to honor his legacy.

“Ed loved playing horseshoes as much as he loved going to and playing football at Holy Spirit High School,” said event organizer Shaun Smith, of Ventnor. “He would have been 33 on July 10 this year, and it’s also been 15 years since we graduated from Spirit. This seemed like a great way to get everyone together to celebrate a good man that we lost too soon.”

The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and is $40 for individuals, $75 for teams of two, and includes a T-shirt and admission to the beef and beer, beginning at noon at the Margate Log Cabin, 600 Jerome Ave. Nonparticipants can attend the beef and beer for $25.

The rain date for the events is Sunday, July 15. Advance registration is required for the horseshoe tournament. Go to to register.
