OCEAN CITY — A crowd dressed in sweatshirts, gloves and hats proudly marched forth Sunday on the Ocean City Boardwalk carrying signs and banners to show support for safe driving in the annual John R. Elliott HERO Walk and 5K Run.

The event, in its eighth year, helps raise money for the HERO Campaign, which promotes using designated drivers and increases awareness of the deadly consequences of drunken driving.

The organization was started in 2000 by the family of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, of Egg Harbor Township, who was driving home from Maryland for his mother’s birthday that July when he was killed in a collision with a drunken driver two months after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.
